U.S. military matters were different in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The Selective Service, in its unique wisdom, hosted a live, broadcast TV program, complete with special guest stars, who would select dates and numbers to determine the order in which 19-year-old males would be drafted for the "war" in Vietnam. The one that was never declared.
In living rooms and basements and elsewhere around the country, friends would gather to watch the event and determine the future of their lives.
